After completing an online application , candidates will be contacted by e-mail and asked to provide supporting documents, primarily the university transcript and diploma. These can be scanned and e-mailed. It is important to send the requested documents as soon as possible (within 2 weeks) in order to be considered for a teaching position in the upcoming school year. You, personally, are responsible for accuracy of the information entered on the application and/or documents submitted to FACES for review. We do not accept applications from individuals, companies or organizations representing the applicant.

If the application and transcripts are acceptable, the candidate will be asked to provide further documents (references, police letter, a copy of your passport) and an interview will be arranged. FACES has representatives in Romania , Philippines , Cameroon and Costa Rica . Candidates in these countries may be interviewed by our representative and videotaped for review by FACES staff. Candidates in other countries may be interviewed by telephone. All telephone interviews are recorded.

If candidates are judged to be successful in the interview and their documents meet the standards for teaching licensure in the state of South Carolina , then we will attempt to locate a school willing to host the visitor teacher for one to three years. We will make the candidate's documents, including the recorded interview, available to school administrators. Some administrators may wish to conduct their own telephone interview with the candidate. If a school accepts a candidate, then FACES will begin the process of obtaining a visa so the teacher may come to the US .

Successful candidates are brought to South Carolina in July for orientation in Columbia . At this time, teachers buy cars and complete necessary paperwork, as well as spending ten days in workshops aimed at acclimating them to teaching in the South Carolina public schools. The school year begins in August. We also bring a limited number of teachers to the United States in December for the second semester which begins in January.

As a FACES Visitor Teacher you will receive:

  • As a first-year teacher, free roundtrip air transportation from your nearest home airport to Columbia , South Carolina .
  • A competitive salary paid bi-weekly with annual wage increases.
  • Free medical and accident insurance coverage.
  • A set monetary travel allowance for travel home during summer holidays.
  • Complimentary tickets to South Carolina Philharmonic concerts.
  • Opportunities to attend four FACES-sponsored parties throughout the year.
  • Interest-free loan for purchasing an automobile and miscellaneous settlement expenses.

It is important to note that schools often cannot offer a position to a foreign teacher until they have taken the necessary steps to ensure that an American teacher has not been excluded from employment. For this reason, FACES cannot confirm a candidate's placement more than 4 months in advance. Often the lead time is much less. FACES makes every effort to find placement for teachers at the earliest possible date.
